Magical landscapes of the Kaliningrad region: where to go for inspiration

~ 12 min read

Kaliningrad region is unlike any other region of Russia. Everything is a little different here: the air smells of the sea, pine trees grow on sand dunes, and Gothic cathedrals tower over the streets with the architecture of old Europe.

Best Route Ideas

We have prepared a Kaliningrad travel guide that will help you plan an eventful and inspiring trip. It contains natural and cultural locations that are worth seeing at least once. Each of them can be a starting point for new experiences and ideas.

Tourist Kaliningrad: where to stay

There are two Accor hotels in Kaliningrad.

The Mercure Kaliningrad Center is located in a green area near Lake Superior, a stone's throw from historical streets and the most interesting locations. The design of the hotel is inspired by Hoffmann's fairy tale "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King". The hotel is ideal for leisure and business tourism. There are conference rooms, a meeting room, cozy restaurants and rooms with lake views. Guests have free access to the fitness room, sauna and hammam.

Outside the hotel: what to see in Kaliningrad and the surrounding area

In the Kaliningrad region, it is easy to combine relaxing by the sea, walking through national parks and exploring history. Below is a selection of places that everyone who comes here should see: from nature reserves to urban symbols.

Curonian Spit

A national park recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This natural route is impressive at first glance. A narrow strip of land stretches for 98 km between the Baltic Sea and the Curonian Lagoon. You'll encounter several unique locations along the way.

The "Dancing Forest", where the trunks of the pines seemed to freeze in a dance. Why the trees took on such shapes is unknown. The hiking trail here is short, about 1.2 km, with wooden decking along it.

The Fringilla ornithological station, founded back in 1901, operates on the 23rd kilometer of the Curonian Spit. Ornithologists from all over the world come here. In spring and autumn, tens of millions of birds migrate here. In summer, there are guided tours where you can see how birds put on rings and talk about their movements.

Orekhovaya Dune, also known as Efa Height, is located closer to the southern part of the spit. It is one of the highest dunes in Europe, with a viewing platform at the top. A wooden trail about 2.5 km long leads here, and there are viewing platforms. Panoramas of the forest, sandy ridges, the sea and the bay open from the height. The view is so impressive that many stay here longer than planned.

Further along the highway to the Lithuanian border is an ecological trail to Lake Swan, home to many rare birds. This is a peaceful route through the pine forest and the dunes. At the end of the way there is an observation deck with a view of the bay.

The Council

Before traveling, it is worth considering that during the high season, excursions here are quickly dismantled, so it is better to book a guide in advance. If you are driving in your own car, remember that parking is not available everywhere. On popular routes, you will have to walk — you can only park your car in permitted areas. Entry to the Curonian Spit by car costs 400 rubles per person.

Baltic Spit

Many tourists, planning what exactly is worth visiting in Kaliningrad, overlook the Baltic Spit, the westernmost point of Russia. But in vain: this is one of the most unusual and atmospheric locations in the region.

From the Kaliningrad region, you can only get here by water — by ferry, which departs from the marina in Baltiysk every two hours, weather permitting.

Spit was once a closed area: the German military airfield Neutief with huge hangars and runways was located here. Later it was used by the Soviet military. Today, this place is open for walks. You can see the ruins of hangars, walk along the concrete slabs of old paths, look into the forts of the XIX century and imagine how it all looked during the Second World War. The atmosphere is like in the movie: deserted buildings, rusting structures and traces of the past.

In Baltiysk, it is worth visiting the museum "Old Lunette" — it is located in the old residence of the airfield commander. Local enthusiasts restored the building, collected artifacts, documents, uniforms, weapons, and created an interesting exhibit about how the area lived in the 20th century. This is an informal but very soulful museum, which hosts guided tours.

Zelenogradsk

A cozy resort town on the Baltic coast. It is optimal for an educational holiday: you can combine a comfortable beach leisure with a tour of ancient German architecture, unusual museums and attractions.

Until 1945, Zelenogradsk was called Kranz. The city has preserved many architectural monuments in the Prussian style.

  • The main street is Kurortny Prospekt with cafes, restaurants and souvenir shops. Beautiful historical buildings have been preserved here, including the 1896 Kranz Post Office and the Schutz Sisters apartment building.
  • The boardwalk is a popular place for walking. It is a picturesque embankment with a length of about 2.5 km. Along the way, there are cozy cafes, equipped recreation areas and descents to the beach, and views of the Baltic Sea open from the pier.
  • The Eye of the Baltic Ferris Wheel is one of the symbols of the city. Its height is 50 meters. The cabins for six people offer wonderful views of the Baltic Sea, the Curonian Spit and the center.

Zelenogradsk is known as the "city of cats". There is a private Murarium museum on the territory of the 1905 water tower. There are thousands of figurines, paintings, and artifacts dedicated to cats on several floors.

In addition to the Murarium, the city has a museum of local lore in Max Krell's villa, museums of fashion, architecture, history, antique toys and dolls.

Svetlogorsk

A picturesque resort on the Baltic coast with a rich history and the spirit of an ancient European city.

It has been mentioned since the 13th century as a small Prussian village. Until 1947, it was called Rauschen. In the 19th century, villas and boarding houses began to be built here, and after the construction of the railway from Konigsberg in the early 20th century, Svetlogorsk became a popular resort.

The architectural dominant is the 1907-1908 water tower in the style of national romanticism, built by architect Kukuk. In 1978, a sundial was installed on it, and nearby there is a pavilion with an artesian mineral water source connected to a local hydrotherapy center.

Svetlogorsk is surrounded by greenery of parks and pine forests, which makes it especially cozy. The embankment is about 2 km long and is a popular location for walking with sea views.

Among the attractions are the Makarov Organ Hall, the Wheel of History Museum, sculptures and art objects inspired by the work of Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann. Here you can also see monuments related to the history of the region and the Second World War.

Amber

Another interesting place in Kaliningrad, which is definitely worth a look. A small village on the shore of the Gdansk Bay, where the lion's share of the world's amber reserves is concentrated. Yantarny received the international Blue Flag award back in 2016 for the purity of water and sand. The Anna Mine beach with soft white sand about 300 meters long is one of the most comfortable in the Baltic Sea: the water warms up quickly, and there are no crowds of vacationers here.

There is also a wooden boardwalk along the sea, where you can take a quiet walk and enjoy the view. The old Maurice Becker Park, created in the 19th century, stretches along the shore. Century-old beeches, lime trees and a tulip tree grow in it. The atmosphere of the park seems to invite you to linger and be inspired by the greenery and quiet alleys.

The Kaliningrad Amber Plant operates in the village, which produces about 500 tons of amber per year and provides about 90% of the global market for this solar stone. The combine has a museum and a viewing platform at the Primorsky deposit quarry, from which you can see how amber is mined, and you can see the mechanisms of the hydraulic monitor and excavator in motion.

If you have time, visit the Amber Castle Museum and Exhibition Complex, located in a 14th‑century building. There are exhibits related to the life of the Prussians, stone processing and the history of the region.

Donskoye settlement

Donskoye is a place for lovers of seascapes and those who want to visit the natural attractions of Kaliningrad. The coast here is picturesque: high sandy slopes, wide beach, endless sea and almost complete absence of people. This is an ideal option for those who want silence and a "wow effect". The coast stretches for almost 4 kilometers, and the descent to the sea is possible only along steep paths or metal stairs. The slopes reach 60 meters — it is better not to linger at the edge.

The beach is sandy, the entrance to the water is shallow, the sea is shallow near the shore. After a storm, amber can be found here right in the discarded algae. Walleye, flounder and even salmon are caught here, and paragliders sometimes soar in the sky.

From one point of the beach there is an impressive view of Cape Taran with a lighthouse of the 19th century. The territory of the lighthouse belongs to the military department and is closed to the public, but the panorama itself is a real find for photographing.

There are no cafes, toilets, or lifeguards here. It is better to take everything you need — water, a snack, a blanket - with you. But in return — silence, space, the opportunity to be alone with the sea. And, most likely, the best photos from the Baltic.

Sovetsk and Neman

Sovetsk is a small town on the banks of the Neman River. It is known for its rich history and preserved Prussian architecture. Until 1946, the city was called Tilsit and became famous as the site of the signing of the Peace of Tilsit between Alexander I and Napoleon.

The symbol of the city is the Queen Louise Bridge, opened in 1907. It connects Russia with Lithuania and has been rebuilt several times.

In Sovetsk, you can see old houses, cobblestone pavements, and buildings in the Prussian style. Among the interesting places and attractions are the monument to Queen Louise in the city park of Jakobsruhe, a memorial sign in honor of the Peace of Tilsit, a memorial complex at the mass grave of Soviet soldiers, a sculpture of an elk and a museum of military equipment.

The cultural pride of the city is the Tilsit Theater, now operating as the Kaliningrad Regional Theater for Young Audiences. The Museum of the History of Sovetsk introduces the events of the Tilsit world, the city's past and its prominent residents.

Neman is a small town 13 km from Sovetsk, located on the banks of the river of the same name. Founded in the Middle Ages, it was formerly called Ragnit and has preserved a rich Prussian and German heritage.

Here you can see the church of the Holy Family in the Gothic style, the remains of fortifications and old residential buildings. The Museum of local lore houses exhibits telling about the history and cultural traditions of the region.

Where else to go in Kaliningrad — urban locations

After the country routes, it's time to get to know the soul of Kaliningrad — its center.

Kant Island and the Cathedral

Kanta Island is the heart of Kaliningrad, a small piece of land on the Pregolya River, formerly known as Kneiphof. Its history is connected with the trade and education of Konigsberg, one of the three medieval towns in the region. In the Middle Ages, there were narrow streets with houses of artisans and merchants, a town hall, a university and residential areas.

The Cathedral of Our Lady and St. Adalbert is a symbol of Kaliningrad. It was built in the 14th century in the Baltic Gothic style. During the Second World War, the cathedral was seriously damaged, but the exterior walls were preserved, and restoration began in 1992. The grave of Immanuel Kant, who taught on the island, is located near the northeast wall of the building, a place of pilgrimage for tourists and fans of philosophy. There is a Kant Museum and an organ hall on site, as well as guided tours and concerts.

Fish Village and lighthouse Observation Tower

The fish village is a historical, ethnographic, trade and craft complex. It is located on Oktyabrsky Island opposite Kanta Island and the Cathedral. The quarter was built in 2006 and styled after the German half-timbered architecture with narrow facades, red tiles and wooden crossbeams, reminiscent of the appearance of the old Konigsberg.

Despite the name, fish was never traded here: in the pre-war period, there were "Ochsenmarkt" ("bull market") and wood warehouses on this place, and the fish trade was conducted closer to modern Moskovsky Prospekt.

The complex is connected to Kanta Island by the Honey Bridge, and to the southern part of Kaliningrad by the Jubilee pedestrian drawbridge. In the center stands a 31-meter lighthouse with an observation deck and an elevator. From here you can enjoy panoramic views of the city, the river and the island of Kanta. During the construction, 14th-century basements with Prussian vaults were discovered, which are now used as restaurants.

Inside the building, cafes, souvenir shops and a glass museum are located on different floors, where you can see a collection of antiques and handicrafts. There is a sculpture of a seagull with an egg on the parapet of the observation deck: tourists believe that if you rub the egg, the wish will come true.

The fish village is popular with visitors and locals alike. Holidays and festivals are held here, live music is played in the evenings, and river boats are moored on the embankment. You can try Baltic cuisine and enjoy the scenic views of Pregola.

Museum of the World Ocean

One of the largest museums in Russia, dedicated to the history of ocean exploration, the development of navigation, the world of marine life, geology and hydrology. It was opened in 1994.

The complex is located on the Peter the Great embankment, where previously there was a working port district with a port, warehouses and industrial enterprises. Today you can see numerous exhibitions here: collections of shells and corals, fossils and other samples of the underwater world. The complex includes several pavilions.

The pride of the museum is the historical Embankment of the fleet. The famous scientific research vessels Vityaz and Cosmonaut Viktor Patsaev, the submarine B-413, the fishing vessel SRT-129, as well as the floating lighthouse Irbensky are moored here.

Zoo

Kaliningrad Zoo is one of the oldest and largest in Russia. It was founded on May 21, 1896 on the initiative of entrepreneur and nature lover Herman Claes on the basis of pavilions built for an industrial exhibition. The first collection consisted of 893 animals of 262 species.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the zoo turned into one of the favorite recreation areas of the city residents. In addition to animals, there were parks, restaurants, playgrounds, tennis courts and other entertainment. In 1945, it was almost completely destroyed — all but four of the animals died. Among them is the hippopotamus Hans, who has become a symbol of the zoo.

In 1947, the animal park received its current name and was restored. Today it occupies 16.7 hectares and has almost 3,000 animals of more than 300 species, including rare and listed in the Red Book.

Kaliningrad Zoo combines the functions of a zoo and an arboretum — rare species of trees and shrubs grow here. The territory has an aquarium and terrarium, a fountain, play areas, historical buildings of the XIX century. Guided tours, themed parties and events are held. Since 2013, an audio guide with the voice of Nikolai Drozdov has been available to guests.

Amber Museum

The only museum in the Russian Federation dedicated entirely to the Baltic "sunstone". It is located in the Don Tower, a former fortification of the mid-19th century, on the shore of Lake Verkhne.

The museum's collection includes more than 16,000 exhibits: from raw amber pieces of various shades and textures, including the country's largest nugget weighing about 4.5 kg, to artisan products and archaeological finds.

The exposition occupies 3 floors and 28 halls with an area of about 1000 m2. It is divided into five sections: the origin and properties of amber; archaeological finds from the Neolithic to the Roman Empire; art of the 17th-20th centuries, including copies of the Amber Room; the history of the Konigsberg Manufactory and the Kaliningrad Amber Combine; modern works by artists.

Special attention is paid to the technology of stone extraction and processing, its importance in culture and industry. Sculptures are installed in the courtyard, and amber products can be purchased at the souvenir shop.

Bunker Museum

It is located on Universitetskaya Street in the city center. It was opened in a restored German bunker during the Second World War. The Konigsberg defense command post was located here. It was at this place that General Otto Lyash signed the surrender of the city.

The exhibition is dedicated to the events of the assault, the role of the bunker in the final battles and the situation of the German headquarters. Inside there are layouts, maps, communication equipment and documents that help recreate the atmosphere of the last days of the war.

Forts and bastions of Kaliningrad

A unique network of defensive structures that formed the powerful fortress system of Konigsberg.

The history of fortifications begins in 1255, when the Teutonic Knights built a castle on the Pregola. Walls, ramparts, towers and bastions were built around it and the three city parts — Altstadt, Kneiphof and Lebenicht, forming a protective ring.

In the 17th century, a new line of fortifications appeared: 11 bastions, three ravelins, two towers and a red brick city gate in the Neo-Gothic style. These objects have been preserved as architectural monuments of the 19th century.

The Konigsberg Night Feather Bed is the largest fortification ring built in 1872-1892. It included 15 forts, stretched for 43 km with a diameter of about 12 km. Each fort had its own name and was equipped with moats, casemates and powerful walls.

During the Second World War, many fortifications were destroyed. Today, some of them are abandoned, others have been restored and operate as museums. The Grolman Bastion, the largest in the city, built in 1849, stands out among the preserved ones.

The 19th—century city gates, as well as the Wrangel and Don towers, are vivid examples of the evolution of fortification art from the Middle Ages to the 19th century.
