Tourism in Mordovia: where to feel the atmosphere of national culture

~ 8 min read

Getting to know Mordovia begins with its people and traditions. The local villages still weave traditional canvases and carve wooden toys. Exhibitions and concerts are held here, where they introduce the Finno-Ugric heritage. Folk songs are played in the squares, collections of costumes and jewelry are presented in museums, and on holidays guests are treated to pies according to ancient recipes. Modern hotels operate in the region, where international standards of service are harmoniously combined with elements of local culture.

Where is Mordovia located and what is the republic known for

Mordovia is a part of the Volga Federal District, located between the rivers of the Oka and the Middle Volga in the center of the European part of Russia. The capital of the region is Saransk, a compact city with a population of about 300,000 people, where there are many parks and green areas. The republic is one of the Finno-Ugric regions and unites two peoples — Erzya and Moksha, each with its own language and traditions.

The history of the region goes back centuries: archaeological finds show that tribes lived on this land back in the Bronze Age. Later, the territory became part of the Ancient Russian state, and then the Russian Kingdom. Today, Mordovia is known as a region with developed agriculture, crafts and rich cultural heritage.

This is a convenient destination for tourists: Saransk is only 600 kilometers from Moscow, and it is easy to get here by train, bus, car or plane. Mordovia combines the comfort of a small region with a wealth of ethnographic experiences, from national holidays to modern architecture.

The legacy of the Mordovian people: rituals, costumes and holidays

Erzya and Mokshi form a rich cultural palette of the region. It is easy to notice recognizable details on their holidays: red and black embroidery motifs on shirts, beaded breast ornaments, belts with pendants ringing in the dance. These elements can be seen at museum exhibitions and at performances of folklore groups.

In spring, Mokshans celebrate "Aksha Kelu" ("White Birch"), a republican open-air celebration that takes place in the village of Vadovskie Selishchi. There are craft venues, concerts, tastings, and workshops. The program includes power contests, including belt wrestling. The central image is a decorated birch tree, around which ritual songs are played.

Erzans gather for the "Ozks Velen", a nationwide prayer service with songs and dances, where elders pray for the welfare of the people. Separately, "Rasken Ozks" is held — a big holiday near the village of Chukaly, which takes place every three years.

Elements of traditional culture are also noticeable in the urban environment. In Saransk, they manifest themselves in the decoration of buildings, in sculptures by local craftsmen, in collections of costumes and jewelry in museums. This atmosphere is felt on the streets and holidays and accompanies travelers throughout their trip around the region.

National cuisine

Mordovian cuisine has been shaped for centuries and is closely connected with nature. The food has always been based on cereals, dairy products, meat, game, honey, berries and mushrooms. The recipes have been passed down from generation to generation, and many of them have survived to the present day.

One of the most recognizable dishes was "bear's paw", a minced meat patty with liver, decorated with rye crackers that mimic claws. Equally popular are pachat, traditional thick pancakes made from different flours, resembling pancakes, and panjakai — pies with potato-curd filling. Boiled eggs are often found on the festive table. They were traditionally cooked in a Russian oven: they were filled with water and left to languish in the heat until the water boiled away. The protein became dense and acquired a brown hue, and the taste turned out to be special, slightly baked. Today, this method is recreated in the oven or in special dishes.

The Mordovian kitchen has its own drinks. Posa is a low—alcohol drink made from sugar beet with hops, and pore is a honey drink similar to light beer. Today, they can be tasted at festivals and in establishments where they continue to cook according to traditional recipes.

Among the restaurants, the Mordovian Farmstead in Saransk can be distinguished — it serves bear paw, panjakai pies, boiled eggs and other dishes that have become symbols of local cuisine. The atmosphere is complemented by the interior in the style of a wooden hut.

Ethnic motifs in architecture and interiors

Mordovian ornaments and patterns permeate the architectural space of the city, creating a special atmosphere of national flavor. In the urban design of Saransk, you can find traditional eight-pointed "rosettes" —  a solar sign symbolizing the sun, warmth and stability. This motif is also present on the flag of the republic, emphasizing its importance in the culture of the people.

Modern architectural projects and hotels in Mordovia also appeal to ethnic motives. A striking example of the integration of local style into modern architecture is the Mercure Saransk Center. Its facades are decorated with a grid of ornaments, referring to folk art, the patterns can be read even on the glass panels. The interiors feature wooden elements with decorative inserts made in the spirit of traditional carvings. The signature panel of the Mercure brand is made of natural wood, which echoes the artisanal traditions of the region.

Special attention was paid to the details here. Wooden sculptures by local craftsman Andrey Kiryushkin can be seen in the hotel's premises. The interiors were designed by the Sundukovy Sisters studio — the designers carefully added elements of Mordovian mythology and ornaments familiar from folk crafts. This hotel in Mordovia has become a place where modern comfort is combined with the cultural code of the region, and guests feel the atmosphere of tradition without leaving the walls of the hotel.

What else to see in Mordovia: eco-tourism and crafts

Outside of Saransk, there are traditional craft centers that have become the hallmark of Mordovia and a popular destination for day trips. They allow you not only to get acquainted with the art of Erzyan and mokshan, but also to try yourself as a master or participant in rituals.

Podlesnaya Tavla — village of carvers

The Erzya village of Podlesnaya Tavla in the Kochkurovsky district is known throughout Russia for its unique wood carving school. An experimental art school has been operating here since the 1930s, where children and adults create traditional carved toys. This is where the famous Tavli carving comes from, included in the project "Seven Wonders of the Finno-Ugric World".

The main symbol of the craft is the Tavli horse with an ornament in the form of a solar sign. According to legend, this sign symbolizes the sun and vitality, and the figurine itself is considered a talisman and a link between the world of gods and people. Today, the Tavli horse has become one of the brands of Mordovia, its image is used in souvenirs and on tourist logos.

Tourists coming to Podlesnaya Tavla can visit the carvers' workshops, try their hand at wood carving and purchase authentic souvenirs. Exhibitions and workshops are held here, and each toy contains elements of the ancient traditions of the Erzya culture.
