Where in Russia to relax at hot springs: a selection of the most popular places Code generation from the name

~ 15 min read

Several thousand years ago, people came up with the idea of using thermal springs for recreation and treatment — this branch of medicine is now called balneology. Hot waters differ in their composition and medicinal properties: they relieve fatigue, relieve joint pain, and soothe the nervous system. Basking in them is an unforgettable pleasure, but it is important to keep in mind the contraindications. Let's tell you what such springs are, how to swim in them correctly, and which thermal waters are the most popular in Russia.

Hot springs — what is it

These are natural places where hot water comes to the surface directly from underground. This water is rich in minerals and other useful microelements, has healing properties and helps in improving health.

Thermal water is heated in two main ways. Most often — due to volcanic activity. But there is another option: the water goes deeper than a kilometer, where the temperature of the earth's crust is higher, and then, following the laws of convection, rises back. In both cases, passing through the rocks, it is saturated with minerals and trace elements useful for the body.

The following types of sources are distinguished by temperature:

  • warm — +20...+37 °C;
  • hot — +37...+50 °C;
  • very hot — +50...+100 °C.

In the Caucasus, water warms up to +50...+90 °C, and in areas of volcanic activity, for example, in Kamchatka, in geysers and fumaroles, temperatures up to +200 °C occur.

Most of the healing springs in Russia are paid, they are equipped for comfortable and safe bathing. There are also free ones, but it is often inconvenient to get to them.

What are the benefits of bathing in thermal waters

Natural hot springs in Russia with different temperatures and compositions have powerful healing properties, having a beneficial effect on the body.

What are the benefits of thermal waters:

  • Improvement of skin condition. Hot springs are rich in minerals such as sulfur, calcium, magnesium and sodium. These elements help to cleanse and moisturize the skin, accelerate the healing of small wounds, reduce inflammation and help with skin diseases such as eczema and psoriasis.
  • Relaxation and stress relief. Warm water has a gentle massage effect, helping to relieve tension in the muscles and improve overall well-being. Bathing in such places promotes the production of endorphins, reduces stress levels and improves sleep quality.
  • Joint and muscle support. High water temperature and mineral saturation help to improve blood circulation, accelerate recovery after physical exertion and reduce joint pain. Thermal springs are especially useful for people suffering from arthritis, rheumatism and other diseases of the musculoskeletal system.
  • Improvement of the respiratory system. Some thermal springs are rich in hydrogen sulfide, which has a positive effect on the respiratory tract. Inhaling the vapors of such water helps with asthma, bronchitis and allergic reactions.
  • Stimulation of metabolism. Hot mineral baths promote the activation of metabolism, improve blood circulation and promote the elimination of toxins from the body. This helps maintain overall tone and increases energy levels.

Remember: mineral water treatment is not suitable for everyone. Balneotherapy is contraindicated in type 1 diabetes mellitus, pregnancy in the second trimester, the presence of infectious diseases in the active phase, a tendency to seizures, and exacerbation of chronic diseases. Warming up is strictly prohibited for people with neoplasms.

Thermal springs in Russia

There are hundreds of sanatoriums in Russia with natural hot pools, which tourists visit in summer and winter. There are such resorts in the south, in the Caucasus mountains and near the volcanoes of Kamchatka, in Altai and the Urals, in the middle zone and the center of the country. These are almost always beautiful places where you can improve your health and just relax.

We have compiled for you a list of the most popular Russian hot springs in different parts of the country. There are Accor hotels near these springs, which have saved you time searching for accommodation.

Matsesta, Sochi

Matsesta district is the first place that made Sochi the most popular resort in Russia. One of the best hot springs in Russia, hydrogen sulfide, is located here: they were used by the ancient Greeks. The fiery bowl on the coat of arms of Sochi is a symbol of the place.

Matsesta has several sanatoriums with beautiful pools. The Old Matsesta is especially famous — it is a monumental Soviet-era structure that looks like an ancient temple. It is sometimes called the "palace of health", then "hydrotherapy No. 4". Treatments take place indoors, and outside there is a lush park with ponds, sculptures and hundreds of different plants. A wonderful example of a Soviet-era resort that has preserved the good traditions of that time and the atmosphere.

The healing power of the local water is in a high concentration of hydrogen sulfide. It treats the cardiovascular system, musculoskeletal system, gynecological, skin and other diseases.

You can go to the spa for a couple of hours, but it makes little sense. It is better to order a set of procedures and stay in Sochi for a few days: this can be done both in winter and summer.

What else can you do: guided tours of the resort and independent walks. You can also set aside a day or two for a trip to neighboring Abkhazia.

Aquarius recreation center, Krasnodar Territory

Guam Gorge Nature Park is located 150 kilometers from Krasnodar. The Aquarius recreation center is located very close to the gorge, where there are thermal springs with a water temperature of 38-39 °C. The local hot water contains a lot of calcium, magnesium, nitrites, iodide ions, polycarbonate ions, and ammonium. Like hydrogen sulfide, this therapeutic kit helps well with diseases of the heart and blood vessels, joints and ligaments, gynecological and skin diseases.

There are gazebos and barbecues on the territory of the hot springs, but it is better not to stay in one place for a long time, but to take a walk through the Guam Gorge, which is considered one of the most beautiful places in Russia and is protected by UNESCO. An excursion narrow-gauge steam locomotive runs along the bottom of the gorge.

If you are passing through Krasnodar, stay at the ibis Krasnodar Center, an inexpensive hotel in the historical center. The ibis Kitchen restaurant is located on site. The cozy lobby bar with a wide selection of drinks and snacks is open 24 hours a day.

What else you can do: there are many interesting things nearby, including cafes, gazebos, fishing, jipping, horseback riding.

Zhemchug settlement, Republic of Buryatia

This wild but very beautiful resort is located at the foot of the Sayan Mountains, in the Tunka Valley Nature Reserve. There are only mountains, forests, and lakes for many kilometers around. In the last century, Russia was looking for oil here: workers found nothing, but drilled two hot springs.

"Pearl" hot springs have no analogues in Russia and around the world in terms of composition — a lot of methane and carbon dioxide, noticeably less hydrogen sulfide and radon. They treat the musculoskeletal system, nervous, sexual and skin diseases, prevent the same diseases and increase immunity.

There are two swimming pools on the territory of the base in summer and winter: in one the temperature is 36°C, in the other — 52-55°C. The village of Zhemchug itself is located 200 kilometers from Irkutsk. If you go there from the city, stop at the ibis Irkutsk Center, which is a five-minute walk from the Angara embankment. The menu of the restaurant, which is located on the ground floor of the hotel, offers healthy food options and local delicacies.

What else can you do: there are many shops in the village of Hse, where there are thermal springs. They also ride horses here and you can shoot at the shooting range.

Verkhny Bor recreation center, Tyumen

The local hot spring is an outdoor pool with an area of 400 square meters, which has areas for hydro massage and swimming. The temperature here is about 40°C all year round. Next to the pool there is a Russian bath, a Turkish hammam and a Finnish sauna. There are procedures that are rarely found in Russia, such as fish-foot peeling (with the help of fish) and a mini-sauna "Cedar barrel", where you will be wrapped in a linen cloth soaked in an infusion of local herbs. Sweat quickly and get rid of toxins.

The recreation center is located 15 kilometers from Tyumen and the Mercure Tyumen Center is a hotel with a fitness center and good breakfasts.

What else can you do: go to a cafe or restaurant, families with children will enjoy a mini zoo.

Dir, Sverdlovsk region

In Soviet times, the Emerald Coast resort was located on the shore of the Rezh reservoir, which in 2014 was turned into a beautiful and modern recreation center based on thermal springs.

There are two swimming pools on the base: an outdoor one with a length of 25 meters and an indoor one with a length of 10 meters. The water for them is extracted from a hundred-meter well, it is rich in radon, which accelerates wound healing, calms nerves and improves heart function.

The outlet temperature of the water is quite low (17°C), but it is constantly heated — up to 36°C in summer and up to 39°C in winter. The pools themselves have an area with a Jacuzzi and hydro massage, and nearby there is an aroma sauna, a dry sauna and a hammam. Before you go home, you can have a hearty hot meal at a local cafe.

It is convenient to get to the Rezh reservoir from Yekaterinburg: it is 90 kilometers from the place. In the city, you can stay at the Novotel Yekaterinburg Center, a hotel with a gym and hammam that can perfectly complement a wellness program.

What else can you do: ride horses, take a walk in the picturesque surroundings or go on an excursion to the cheese factory.

How to swim in thermal springs

Healing springs in Russia and in the whole world are not only a pleasant relaxation, but also a serious procedure that requires compliance with certain rules. If you approach bathing correctly, you can get the maximum benefit and avoid unpleasant consequences.

General rules of bathing in mineral and thermal pools:

  • Take a shower before bathing. Warm water will wash away impurities from the skin and open the pores, helping the body to better absorb nutrients from the water.
  • Do not swim on a full or empty stomach. It is optimal to eat 1.5-2 hours before the procedure.
  • Give up intense physical activity 30-60 minutes before and after bathing.
  • After getting out of the water, take your time to take a shower again. The minerals remaining on the skin will continue to act.
  • Let your body rest. Lie down for 1-2 hours after the procedure, and if possible, take a nap.
  • Observe the time limits. The average duration of bathing is 15-20 minutes. Staying in water longer can be harmful.
  • Listen to your condition. If you feel dizzy or have a rapid heartbeat, get out of the pool immediately.
  • Drink water. After the procedure, drink 1-2 glasses of clean water to restore the water-salt balance.
  • Choose dark swimsuits. Mineral waters can stain light fabrics.

Bathing rules may vary depending on the type of source, water composition, and medical indications. In sanatoriums and thermal complexes, specialists develop individual treatment regimens — it is important to adhere to them.

Uncontrolled bathing, especially in hot water, can be harmful to the body. People with cardiovascular diseases should be especially careful. To avoid overheating and excessive stress, follow the recommendations of the doctor and the staff of the complex.

By following these simple rules, you will get the maximum benefit and pleasure from the thermal waters without risking your health.
