Extreme sports in Sochi: outdoor activities and the best hotels for extreme athletes

~ 10 min read

Sochi is not only about the sea and resort life. This southern city is a center of active recreation, so fans of adrenaline boost often choose it for a vivid vacation or weekend experience. The main place for extreme entertainment is Krasnaya Polyana. Cascading waterfalls, rocky canyons, mysterious caves ... We tell you what to do for fans of extreme sports in Sochi.

Types of extreme recreation in Sochi

Downhill skiing and snowboarding

So, extreme sports in Sochi: where to go? Let's start with the most understandable recreation for active people — skiing and snowboarding. For such rides, tourists, experienced and beginners, usually choose the resorts of Rosa Khutor, Gazprom Polyana and Krasnaya Polyana. They differ in the number of trails and the cost of ski passes.

Rosa Khutor provides 105 km for skating, Gazprom Polyana - 35 km, Krasnaya Polyana - 30 km. The trails are divided by type of difficulty and are marked in colors on the resort map: "green" (beginners), "blue" (amateurs), "red" (pros) and "black" (super professionals). Everything is fully equipped, with a well-developed infrastructure: a bunch of hotels, bars, nightclubs, retail outlets, there are swimming pools, a spa complex and much more. The season for skiers and snowboarders begins in December and ends in June.

ATV Riding

ATVs are at the top of extreme entertainment in Sochi. An understandable and quite affordable type of recreation that has gained popularity not only among professional adventurers. You will travel through the mountainous expanses and surroundings of Sochi on a four-wheeled all-terrain vehicle.

There are different routes: through protected areas, to waterfalls, along the Old Krasnopolyansk highway along the Mzymta River, visiting attractions like the Tsarsky Bridge or the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, to the ancient Bosporan Kingdom (did you know about this in Sochi?) — and these are not all directions.

The trails have already been checked by experts and are as safe as possible for travelers. Before the trip, each participant is given appropriate equipment.

Paragliding and paratraking

This kind of extreme will allow you to see the southern edge at a height: what pictures of the city, mountains and sea open in the sky, it takes your breath away! In Sochi, you can fly from the mountain peak of the Picket.

The paraglider is considered a safe aircraft, and you will be accompanied by an instructor who will monitor the process. But it is obvious that not everyone decides on such a vacation. However, the risks are worth it: reviewing the selfies that you will have time to take up there, you will probably want to repeat these emotions.

By the way, Sochi also organizes half-hour paragliding flights: the same paraglider, but with a trolley with an engine and a propeller.

Rock Climbing

There is a location in the resort town where those who wish can try their hand at rock climbing - these are Eagle Rocks. Experts assure that no special training is needed to join this pastime, it is safe, and precautions have been taken by the organizers of the mini-tour.

The foot of the cliffs is the start of the route. They give out equipment and conduct training there. After the participants are strapped into the safety net, the most interesting part begins: climbing. Magnificent panoramas of the mountains and the sea, viewing platforms with impressive views, a light snack, coffee and, of course, a lot of beautiful shots on your phones or cameras.

Canyoning

An unusual sport that thrill seekers will enjoy. The essence of it is that you have to explore the canyons: on foot, on the water, with climbing equipment, jumping from waterfalls. It all depends on physical fitness.

Canyoning involves holding events in picturesque locations: in addition to adrenaline, you will also get aesthetic enjoyment of natural resources. We emphasize that you should not engage in such extreme sports on your own: everything should be supervised by professionals. Fortunately, there are many companies in Sochi that organize such tours.

Jeeping

An adrenaline rush for adults and children at any time of the year. You will travel off-road and rocky mountain roads in a group of up to 6 people in jeeps: these are mainly GAZ and UAZ with appropriate certificates and a safety system. The organizers are planning impressive routes in the Sochi National Park, the Caucasian Biosphere Reserve, in canyons, near reservoirs in the mountains and beyond.

"Skypark Sochi"

If you come to Sochi, be sure to plan a visit to a large mountain amusement park. The place will appeal not only to adventurers: those who are in favor of a relaxing holiday are also recommended.

First of all, pay attention to the Skybridge suspension Bridge. The structure is the longest in the country: its length is 439 meters. The American CNN channel even included the bridge in the list of the most spectacular on the planet.

For desperate adventurers, bungee jumping (a jump with insurance from a 207-meter bridge), zip-line (flying over a gorge at a speed of 120 km/h), and the Via Ferrata climbing route are available.

Gorky Fly

Many extreme sports enthusiasts are interested in this high-altitude amusement park. The location itself beckons for "adrenaline" entertainment: It is 2,200 meters above sea level. Guests of the space will be surprised by the zipline, which is the tallest and longest in Russia (1,027 meters). You will also be offered to ride a mountain swing — as if floating in the clouds — or experience a high-speed troll (a pendulum connecting two mountain peaks).

Rafting

Overcoming river rapids and descending through stormy rivers attracts extreme athletes from all over the world. Guides create special routes: you will tickle your nerves and admire the beauty of the mountain landscapes. Halts are provided: for communication with the team, snacks and rest between rafting trips.

There are different levels of difficulty of rafting tours: some are suitable even for children, so be sure to check out the program and choose based on your needs and capabilities. Rafting on the Mzymta River is popular among tourists.

Biking

If you can't imagine your life without a bike or, conversely, want to join it, choose biking. Thanks to him, you will get acquainted with the mountainous surroundings of Sochi while pedaling. There are many cycling destinations in the city: for beginners and professionals, they are carefully developed by travel companies. For example, you can go to Mount Akhun and the Zmeikovsky waterfalls.

Summer and winter bobsleigh

If you are looking for another original way to diversify your everyday life, come to the bobsleigh track at the Sanki Club. Bobsleigh is available to everyone here, even if you've only seen it on TV from now on. Ride at a speed of 125 km/h on a classic bobsleigh sled and touch the world of Olympic sports — this will be remembered for a lifetime.

The descents are conducted accompanied by an International Master of Sports, so it is safe. But there is an age limit for skating: you must be at least 14 years old for skating in the cold season, and at least 12 in the warm season.

Tickets are sold on the official website of the Sanki Club, the organizers advise booking them at least 3-5 days before the desired date of the adventure.

Useful tips for fans of extreme sports

Many extreme athletes have already learned from experience what to take with them on a trip to the thrill. But newcomers to the risky extreme world usually thoroughly study the programs offered by travel agencies. Therefore, we advise you to buy tours only from official operators — for your own safety.

When going to the mountains, for jipping, rafting and other activities, do not forget about appropriate clothing for the weather. Comfortable closed flat shoes, tracksuits, the presence of a warm sweatshirt with long sleeves (it's cool on the mountaintops even on a sultry July day), water — the organizers of the tours tell about these and other subtleties. As a rule, at least one day before the selected date of the event, they send memos to clients in messengers: everything is written in them, they should be guided.

As for the equipment, it is almost always given out on the spot: for free or for an additional fee. Therefore, it makes no sense to purchase a personal safety rope for bungee jumping or a bobsleigh suit for skating at the Sanki Club. Just in case, always check with the representatives of the travel projects you have applied to, whether they provide equipment and, if not, how much the rental will cost.

Otherwise, choose the extreme to your liking and just enjoy the adrenaline rush.
